Sutter enters as two-seed; Wheatland leads boys at six: Lindhurst boys earn home game Friday

Its unfinished business for the Sutter Union High girls soccer team this year after it returns to the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs in only its second year in existence as an area-best No. 2 seed to take on No. 7 Summerville (13-8-2), out of Tuolumne, which finished third place in the Mother Lode League. The game was moved up to 3 p.m. Saturday on the campus of Sutter Union High School as the Huskies do not have lights on their field, according to Sutter Athletic Director Rick Giovannoni. Facilities with lights are scheduled for 6 p.m. starts, while fields without lights play at 3 p.m., according to the section. All championship games in boys and girls soccer will be played at Cosumnes River College. For Sutter (14-5-1), it was at CRC a year ago for the D-V final and fell 6-0 to Colfax. This year the team is again in D-V and will host up until the final set for Feb. 17. In the quarterfinals, Tim Danna’s squad, ranked 46th in the final section full poll, gets the winner of the third-six matchup between host Galt and Argonaut on Feb. 14 in the semifinals. The other half of the bracket is headlined by top-seeded Sonora (15-5-1) and No. 4 Hilmar. Sutter finished third in the Pioneer Valley League – a game-and-a-half up on Lindhurst (9-8-1). The Blazers earned a No. 10 seed in Division IV and will hit the road to take on No. 7 Placer out of Auburn at 6 p.m. Saturday. The winner gets Twelve Bridges (19-3-1), PVL’s second team team, on Feb. 14 in the quarterfinals. Colfax (20-1-2) earned the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye in D-IV. The finals are set for Feb. 20. Boys soccer For Wheatland Union High boys soccer, it captured its second straight PVL title this year with an unbeaten mark on Tuesday. The reward was a sixth-seed where the Pirates (16-2-3) will host No. 11 Orestimba (16-8-4) out of Newman at 6 p.m. Friday on the campus of WUHS. The winner heads to West Sacramento to take on No. 3 Natomas (10-3-4) on Tuesday. Wheatland, which hovered between 30 and 35 in the full SJS rankings each week through the regular season, finished at No. 39 on Monday. Natomas’ final mark was No. 29 in the full rankings. PVL second-place finisher, Lindhurst (14-4), will host El Camino as an eight-seed Friday night at 6 p.m. on campus. The winner gets D-IV top-seed and unbeaten Galt on Tuesday.
