Folsom blanks Del Oro 58-0 - CIF Sac-Joaquin

Playing in the team’s final home game of the regular season on Friday, Folsom High’s varsity football team made the most of it in a 58-0 victory over Del Oro. The Bulldogs (6-1 overall, 4-0 Sierra Foothill League) will play their last three regular-season games on the road, starting Friday against Whitney (2-5, 2-2). Folsom led Del Oro 7-0 after the first quarter and poured it on with four touchdowns in the second quarter to lead 35-0 at halftime. Folsom managed three more touchdowns in the second half, and a safety. It was a big game for quarterback Ryder Lyons and wide receiver Jameson Powell. Lyons threw five touchdown passes, three to Powell and two to Nela Tupou. Carter Jackson also scored on a 53-yard run. In the second half, backup quarterback Blake Nycum threw two touchdown passes to Beckham Andrus. “We played better this week compared to last week when we played Oak Ridge,” Folsom High coach Paul Doherty said. “We were more balanced. We were able to get the ball out on the perimeter early and that helped create momentum and tempo." The Bulldogs were dominant up front defensively, holding the Golden Eagles to just 25 yards on 21 rushes. The leading rusher for Del Oro was Brock Sherman, who tallied 39 yards on eight carries. Neither quarterback passed for more than 100 yards for the Golden Eagles. Jonah Unfried was the leading passer with 83 yards on 10 completions. “Defensively, they had some success early on in their first two series throwing the ball, but we shut their run down," Doherty said. "I think we’re pretty good up front. At any level of football, if you can’t sustain a running game, you’re offensive is pretty limited, especially if you’re down to your No. 2 quarterback. “We had lots of stats and opportunities for offense. Blake Nycum played almost the entire second half and threw two touchdowns. The seniors got to play on senior day.” Folsom now turns its attention to Whitney, which is the first of three remaining opponents the Bulldogs will play on the road. “Whitney is always well-coached, especially defensively,” Doherty said. “They always come ready to play. They’re physical and look to be better offensively. We’ll see how we do on the road this week.” Del Oro now sits at 1-6 and still seeks its first SFL victory. The Golden Eagles will need to win out to reach four wins, which is the minimum required to make the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs. Del Oro will host Jesuit on Friday.
